Everywhere
At the crosswalk lights
I see the same signs
Nur bei grün, Den Kindern zum Vorbild
Only on green, an example for the children

The children need to know how and why
Not to just obey the rules
There is nothing wrong with crossing on red
There is nothing more pathetic than adults
On a deserted street at 2:00am
Waiting for the walklight to turn green
So they may cross an empty street

We need to teach the children
That it is safe to cross the street
When there are no moving automobiles
We need to teach them to question authority
We need to teach the danger in blind obedience

It is time to stop using guilt and intimidation
To kill the human spirit
The act of obeying a traffic light
May seem superficial on the surface
But it exemplifies the internal struggle
Between obedience and personal freedom
The struggle to be human in a world of robots

So come with me children
We will dance in the street when the walklight is red
Perhaps then the drivers in the cars will learn
That a human life is more important than a green light
Perhaps we can teach our grandmothers
That a bigger view of life
Where we have responsibility for our actions
Is better than obedience to them

The future belongs to us, not to them
Not to the past
