for Michael
Deutschland, Fatherland
You have betrayed me
As I walk in other lands
As I speak in other tongues
I understand what you have stolen from me
You have made me German before I am human
You have forced me to think
Until my brain is bigger than my heart
You have taught me to be defensive
At the same time you have taught me to hate myself
My whole life has become a struggle to assimilate
Into the rest of the world
Yet you remain firm in your archaic ideals
You wait for yet another generation to self-annihilate
In the repetitious, insidious cycle
Known to the rest of the world as
The German Problem
And again we Germans must suffer
For something which needs to die
So that we may live
